Please note the Last Word section:

Starting with this issue we will no longer call this communication the “BQ COACHES NEWSLETTER”. There were to many adults not getting the information and some thought only coaches could receive this newsletter. We want EVERY ADULT connected with quizzing as an assistant coach, official and parents to receive this monthly newsletter. The better informed we are, the better the BQ ministry will be. I am asking each DBQC to sign up any adult in any capacity. For example, we are still getting requests for what the breakdown is for the Gospel of Mark, even though it has been in the last 2 newsletters. Simply go to Biblequiz.com, click on “Blog” and pull down “Subscribe”

Also, we have a very generous Christian businessman, who is going to make a nice donation to the BQ Scholarship fund on every sale of kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. Myself and others have or are, in the near future, placing orders with this company and the prices will not be beat for quality cabinets anywhere in America. Check out http://www.creativekitchensdirect.com/ and please make sure you mention the “Bible Quiz Ministry”. This opportunity could bring us several thousand dollars each year for Scholarships!

Corrections in the Acts Scripture Portion

Book of Acts

Quick refresher for everyone heading to Nationals 2016. Here are the official corrections from the 2015–2016 Acts Scripture Portion as found in earlier editions of the Coaches Connection.

First 7 words in Unique Word list are repeated twice. Delete first 7 words.

Acts 1:23 Behind Joseph, insert the words, (Barsabbas, Justus)
Acts 3:12 Questions-should be “we HAD made this man walk? HAD not have (Scripture Portion-Correct)
Acts 7:49–50 Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things? Phrase says the Lord must be inserted. (Scripture Portion-Correct)

Acts 13 Bar-Jesus and Elymas are considered two different individuals. (This information came from the National Bible Quiz Coordinator)

What happened to BibleQuiz.com?

BibleQuiz.com was registered 20 years ago, back when sites like google.com weren’t around.

A lot has changed since then (hello Facebook and YouTube) but one thing that has not changed is the owner. This person never wanted fanfare or attention; he simply had a vision to preserve the history of Bible Quiz, especially Nationals.

Nationals 2014 Participants

Pastor Bernie Elliot, the National A/G Bible Quiz Coordinator, just posted the “Final 40” teams participating at National Finals in Ft. Lauderdale on the TBQ Peoples Facebook group. You can see the list below.

When You Were Young

In my years of coaching, I’ve been blessed to work with some remarkable young people. In Bible Quiz, typically the rules limit the lower end of this scale to 11-or 12-year olds. On rare occasions, an opportunity arises to work with a younger quizzer. This year I have been blessed to work with the best young quizzer I have ever seen.

Congratulations to the Podcast

Tim McDaniel has accomplished a remarkable feat. Yesterday he recorded his 200th edition of the Bible Quiz Podcast. Keeping a free resource like that regularly available is no easy task, so he deserves a lot of respect. I’d encourage everyone to check out the podcast, listen to the 200th show, and take some time to check out the archives.

There are a lot of great shows, and there are some that include me, but don’t hold that against Tim. The podcast is a labor of love, and Tim has done an amazing job and I am glad to have had a front row seat for the ride.

Individual Tournament Quizzing

I don’t recall ever posting about this subject, primarily because it doesn’t really matter very much. It’s much like the Master Memorization Award, in that it appears impressive, but it doesn’t necessarily translate into effective team quizzing. However, it is a part of quizzing, and there are a few ways coaches can help their quizzers do well.

A Foundation for Christmas

Earlier this week, I was at the dentist and noticed the Newsweek magazine pictured to the right. As I started reading the cover story, carefully and cleverly written by a famous agnostic, I was completely unshaken by the doubt and uncertainty he was injecting into the Christmas story. I was unshaken because I knew the real story.

Nationals 2012 - The Champs Had It

In my last blog post, I explained how I was looking for three qualities in the eventual national champion. Now that a week has passed since Owasso, OK was crowned the National champion, I reflect on how they possessed all three of these critical qualities.

Wednesday Evening Notes

The team competition for the 2012 National Finals is over, with the Individual Tournament and Quoting Bee remaining tomorrow, along with the fabled “Match of Death.” Here are a few observations from a coach’s perspective now that things are all wrapped up.
