Dublin, Ohio wins 2024 Teen Bible Quiz National Finals

Cover Image

DALLAS — Unlike last year’s Assemblies of God Teen Bible Quiz National Finals, which was decided on the final question of a one-game playoff, the 2024 edition of the tournament already had its champion determined before the final day of play began.

Radiant Life Church of Dublin, Ohio, got off to a fast start and never really looked back to win the tournament, held at the Hyatt Regency Dallas on July 1-4. They breezed through preliminary-round play on Monday with seven straight wins, only one of which had a margin of victory of less than 100 points. They then went to the Championship Division’s main round robin stage on Tuesday through Thursday, where they won 16 out of 19 games to take first place over the defending 2023 champion “Trinity One” team from Trinity Church in Cedar Hill, Texas, as well as “Precious Ladies” from Braeswood Assembly of God in Houston.

Corrections in the Acts Scripture Portion

Book of Acts

Quick refresher for everyone heading to Nationals 2016. Here are the official corrections from the 2015–2016 Acts Scripture Portion as found in earlier editions of the Coaches Connection.

First 7 words in Unique Word list are repeated twice. Delete first 7 words.

Acts 1:23 Behind Joseph, insert the words, (Barsabbas, Justus)
Acts 3:12 Questions-should be “we HAD made this man walk? HAD not have (Scripture Portion-Correct)
Acts 7:49–50 Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me? says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things? Phrase says the Lord must be inserted. (Scripture Portion-Correct)

Acts 13 Bar-Jesus and Elymas are considered two different individuals. (This information came from the National Bible Quiz Coordinator)

Nationals 2014 Thursday Preview

As things are wrapping up on Wednesday, I wanted to mention where we stand with respect to the Final Four. Right now, only five teams stand a chance to make it. Results through round 17 may be found on Grand Central.

First, there’s Bothell’s, “The A Team” at 15-2. They are guaranteed a spot. They play Swedesboro and Phoenix in the morning.

Nationals 2014 Preview

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since we all gathered in Chicago, IL to watch 40 teams compete for the national championship, but the 52nd National Finals begin one week from today.

Wednesday Preview

The purpose of this post is to let people know the possible outcomes on Wednesday morning and what it means for the Final Four. At this point, any team with more than 7 losses is mathematically eliminated from contention. Right now the only scenario in which a team with seven losses can make the top bracket would be if they win all the games, James River and Spring lose all four games tomorrow and the second Bothell loses at least two of their games. That creates a tie with seven losses.

Monday Wrap-up

This is just a quick wrap-up of nationals through Monday night. Results can be found here. Of particular note, is that the two teams I mentioned as “shoe-ins” for the Final Four each have one loss. Right now, James River and Bellevue remain the only undefeated teams.

I saw Bothell’s top team several times in the prelims and they looked quite good. James River had a very good game in my room against Central. Unfortunately, I will not see either Owasso or the top Bothell team in the regular rounds.

Abby leads the top scorer field again, but not by an insurmountable lead.

We tested out streaming for a few matches in my room and it worked just fine, so I can pretty confidently say that we will be streaming the final activities on Wednesday and Thursday. If at all possible, we will stream BOTH semi-final matches, the third and first place games, plus the finals of the individual tournament and the quoting bee as well as parts of the banquet.

A Prayer from the Official Question Writer

Lord, I pray for BQ Nationals 2013.

I pray for traveling mercies on all those coming to Chicago, whether by auto, bus, train, airplane, bicycle, tricycle, or by the least reliable form of transportation – the church van that was used last weekend by the Royal Rangers and not cleaned afterwards. Keep all the drivers sane, and may they all be able to find a suitable Country Music station.

Nationals Thoughts

Well, it appears that with Karl and James unable to make it, I am the main link to the world outside the Hyatt Regency this year. I, myself, am getting there at the last minute, flying out early Sunday morning the day after my brother’s wedding.

Nationals 2012 - The Champs Had It

In my last blog post, I explained how I was looking for three qualities in the eventual national champion. Now that a week has passed since Owasso, OK was crowned the National champion, I reflect on how they possessed all three of these critical qualities.

Post Nationals Stats

Nationals is over, and championships have been won. I wanted to mention a few special statistics that I compiled (with the help of Seth Sundell and Larry Mullins). Now that we use Larry’s program to do the stats, he can easily provide question-by-question breakdowns, so I know how many rooms each question was answered correctly in. Due to some problems with the program on the first day, challenger stats are not included here.

The first stat I wanted to look up was questions that only one person got correctly. This is to show off the extra work that each of these quizzers did, in order to be the only quizzer in the country to answer correctly. This was true of only 5 questions in the regular rounds:

Wednesday Evening Notes

The team competition for the 2012 National Finals is over, with the Individual Tournament and Quoting Bee remaining tomorrow, along with the fabled “Match of Death.” Here are a few observations from a coach’s perspective now that things are all wrapped up.
