1999 National Finals

The 37th National Bible Quiz Finals took place August 3-6, 1999 in Lakeland, Florida at Southeastern College covering the books of Acts. Bernie Elliot was the acting National Coordinator (made official during the awards ceremony) and Monica Batty was the official question writer.

The event was won by Orange Hills A/G, Orange, CA. Three teams tied for second place. In the first playoff round, Grace A/G, Syracuse, NY beat Mountain View A/G, Las Vegas, NV. In the second round, Christian Chapel A/G, Tulsa, OK beat Grace A/G, Syracuse, NY

Orange Hills Assembly of God from Orange, California, won all 23 rounds of competition. Orange Hills thus became the first undefeated team since Decatur, GA in 1978 when eight teams participated. They were the only team to have gone undefeated since the expansion to 16, 20 and 24 teams. The previous record belonged to the 1993 champs from Lakewood, CA, also coached by Greg House which set a record of 18-1. This marked the eleventh time that a team from the Southwest region had won nationals. The team also set records for highest team per game average (278.48), highest winning margin (242.39) and most perfect games (3).

The participants in the 1999 National Finals included past National Champions from Grace A/G, Syracuse, NY (1996) and Allison Park A/G, Allison Park, PA (1995).

The top scorer at the 1999 National Finals was Kent Piacenti of Orange Hills A/G, Orange, CA. Kent’s per quiz average of 152.17 broke his record of 132.83 from the previous year. This was his third consecutive top scorer victory (having tied Jeremy Horn in 1997). He continued his dominance by winning the individual tournament as well. Kent also tied his previous record of 22 quiz outs, however this year he did not quiz out backward at all. In addition, 16 of those quiz outs were perfect games.
